In class we summarized the effective learning environment model described
in How People Learn ch. 6. The learning environment has four components: learner-centered,
knowledge-centered, assessment-centered, and community-centered. Assignment 2 asks you to compare
a class you observe to this model. |

In class on 9/27/06, we viewed a PPT overview of the Understanding
by Design method. I asked you to look through the PPT again shortly before
class on 10/4/06, to bring the ideas freshly to mind, so that we can
begin straightaway in class with spending the entire class session
practicing using backward design. Here is a link to the PPT: |

Assign. 4 |
You must format your lesson plan according to UMass Boston's official lesson plan format (linked at right and also below). As part of this assignment, you need to demonstrate that you used the backward design method to plan your unit (the planning matrix we used in class is linked below). Part of the requirements for this assignment are that you should provide accommodations or modifications in the lesson for two fictitious students in your classroom who are on IEP's. (If you are currently teaching, you have the option of instead providing written descriptions, similar to the ones I have provided, for two real students in your class on IEP's - please change the names to protect their identities, and then providing accommodations/modifications for them.)
