BOOK OVERVIEW
The book has five sections. The aim of Section I is to "define
the problem," to specify key concepts such as family and child abuse,
types of abuse, and what is known about the effects of child abuse on
deviancy and violent offending. Chapter 1 examines changing concepts
of family abuse, documents its prevalence and its deviant and violent
offending connections. Chapter 2 focuses on two of the one major types
of abuse: Physical Abuse. Chapter three examines Sexual Abuse. The difference
between the two is discussed preliminary to assessing what is known about
their bearing on deviancy and violent offending. Chapter 4 deals with the
two other major types of abuse: Emotional Abuse and Neglect. The
difference between these two is discussed prior to examining their possible
influence on deviancy and violent offending.
Section II examines what light is shed on the deviant and criminological effects of family abuse by major sociological, psychological, and biological theories of crime and deviance. Chapter 5 begins with a discussion of the cross-national evidence concerning conceptions of the nature and extent of the problem of family abuse and its behavioral effects, putting the subject in socio-cultural context. Chapter 6 examines the relevance of major sociological theories of crime and deviancy to the problem of family abuse, child abuse most of all, and its behavioral consequences. The contributions of major psychological perspectives to an understanding of the behavioral effects of family abuse is the subject of this chapter. Chapter 7 examines the bearing of biological perspectives on deviancy and violent offending.
Section III deals with the victims and perpetrators of family abuse by gender, race and ethnicity (Chapter 8), and age (Chapter 9). Attention will be given to the relevant, albeit limited, available cross-national and national data on each of the major topics.
Section IV examines what has been done and what is being contemplated concerning the effort to prevent family abuse and treat those who abuse family members. Chapter 10 examines key subjects such as the ethical, legal, and moral questions involving family intervention to prevent and treat family abuse, efforts to encourage early detection of abuse by school authorities and others, the attempt to deter the problem by enhancing punishment for its perpetration, and the effort to design an effective public policy to assist families to prevent and eliminate the problem. Chapter 11 amasses the evidence concerning private and public sector involvement in efforts to prevent and treat family abuse.
The concluding section summarizes what is known about the deviant and violent
criminal consequences of family abuse, the strength and weaknesses of policies
and programs to treat the problem, and the likely shape and form of future
public policy and programmatic efforts.
