Required Class Meetings

Six online sessions are held during the semester where attendance is required. The sessions for Section 1 (Buckley) are held on Thursday evenings 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST on May 30, June 6, June 13, June 20, July 11, and August 15, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm EST.

Attendance is optional at all other office hours sessions which are held onThursday evenings from 7:00 - 8:00 pm EST.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own books and materials. The following are required for this course. Purchasing information is provided below.

6. Embossed braille workbook (required)

The embossed braille workbook will be mailed directly to students by the instructor. There is no charge for this workbook. Provide your mailing address to the instructor no later than two weeks prior to the course start date by completing the form at this link: http://www.faculty.umb.edu/wendy_buckley/brlone/welcome.html

7. Perkins brailler

Students are not expected to purchase a brailler but are required to have access to a brailler for the entire semester. Students should inquire about loaners from a local resource, agency or individual. Suggested resources include the local library, school system, a nearby special education office or organization, TVI, COMS, or VRT in the area, or any other organization that serves blind/visually impaired individuals.

Note: The brailler must be capable of handling 11 1/2 by 11 braille paper (wide paper, 40 cells). New Generation Brailler and Jumbo Brailler cannot be used.

8. Heavyweight braille paper, 11 ½” w x 11” l.

Most students will use less than half a ream of braille paper in the Braille I course. Students may split the purchase of a ream of paper with one or two other students. Braille paper may be purchased from the following sources or any other source as long as it is heavyweight (90-100 #) and measures 11 ½ x 11.

This is a kit of basic braille materials packaged for students who are taking beginning braille classes. It includes 150 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 manila transcribing paper, 150 sheets of 11 1/2 x 11 manila transcribing paper, a 4-line 28-cell aluminum slate with Saddle Stylus, and a Cranmer abacus. The Cranmer abacus is not used in Braille I, but is required in Braille II. 

9. Slate & Stylus, 27- or 28-cell, 4-line.

Slate & Stylus are available from several sources. The #1 E-Z read slate from Perkins Solutions and the heavyweight metal slate from APH are designed with a slot for labeling tape. 

Any of the following slates are acceptable for use in class:

10. Mailing Envelopes (Recommended, not required)

Many assignments will be done on paper with the brailler and exchanged through the mail. White, blank envelopes with self-sealing flaps measure 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.

11. Headset/Microphone

A computer headset/microphone is strongly recommended for participation in online conference sessions. Available from any electronics or office supply store.

12. Perky Duck Software

This software program is a free download. Please follow the steps below to locate the Perky Duck download page.

  1. Navigate to https://www.duxburysystems.com/perky.asp
  2. Select All Products from the menu
  3. Scroll down the page to select Freeware
  4. Select Perky Duck.
  5. Download directly from the Perky Duck page.

Perky Duck is required for some homework assignments and must be installed on your computer before the course begins.

13. Compatible keyboard for 6-key entry

A computer keyboard capable of 6-key entry to simulate the brailler is required to complete some assignments. Many standard computer keyboards will work in this mode. Please test your computer keyboard and take the necessary measures to obtain a different keyboard if it is determined that yours is incompatible. Follow the instructions posted to test your keyboard.
