STONEHENGE

Stonehenge is an ancient site whose origins are still the subject of much speculation. Located on the chalky plain of Salisbury in the south of England, Stonehenge consists of a circular ditch broken at the northeast such that one could see the sun rise between two large stones on midsummer's day if standing on axis with the break. Stonehenge took the form that we know today very gradually over thousands of years. Little is known of the people who built it, but their ingenuity is indisputable. Stones weighing up to 65 tons were transported from nearly 20 miles away and erected to form a stone circle and five triliths. The engineering feat, accomplished without the use of the wheel or beasts of burden, still puzzles archeaologists today.
