THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA

The necropolis at Giza consisting of three large true pyramids was constructed during the Old Kingdom period of Egyptian history. Largest of the three, the most imposing pyramid is that of Khufu (Cheops in Greek), also called the Great Pyramid. Its construction around 2600 B.C. still confounds archeologists who have proposed a variety of hypotheses about how it might have been accomplished given the large number of stones involved, their weight and the heights to which they had to be lifted. However, the craftsmanship of the construction such that the stones were so carefully dressed that a piece of paper bearly fits between them also demands our respect.
