David L. Levy is Professor and Chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at UMass-Boston, and the College of Management Leadership Fellow. He teaches Business Strategy, International Business, International Political Economy, and Business and its Environment. He is also active in the Ph.D. Program in Public Policy and is a member of dissertation committees for students with appropriate interests.

David is frequently invited to lecture on the topic of business and climate change to policymakers, business and academic audiences. He has recently delivered presentations to a business forum in Berlin, a workshop of United Nations delegates in New York, and seminars at LSE, Manchester, Warwick, and MIT.

His recent book, co-edited with Peter Newell, of Warwick University, UK, is titled “The Business of Global Environmental Governance”, published by MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 2005. You can download the Table of Contents and the Introduction. He is also a co-editor of The Business of Climate Change. Sheffield, UK: Greenleaf Publishing, 2005. (click on the link to view the introduction and table of contents).

David has conducted extensive research on corporate strategic responses to climate change in the US and Europe. He has also been examining the growth of the renewable energy business sector in the New England region, and the economic impact of a regional carbon emission trading system (see CV ).

David is also interested in the political economy of globalization and the struggles to make corporate governance more responsive and accountable to civil society. A paper on the politics of global production networks is forthcoming in the Academy of Management Review (2008), and he recently presented a paper on the Global Reporting Initiative.  David has also recently co-authored a chapter with Rami Kaplan of Tel Aviv University on the politics of Corporate Social Responsibility in an international context (see CV ).

David is currently working on a book on ‘the strategic face of power’. The book examines how relatively weak groups can outmaneuver their more entrenched adversaries who have greater access to the traditional resources of power, such as money and formal authority. The book develops themes from his AMR 2008 paper and from a paper co-authored with Maureen Scully recently published in Organization Studies.

David serves on the editorial boards of the journals Organization and Environment,  Critical Perspectives on International Business, and the International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. He has been an advisor in the development of the Massachusetts Climate Change Action Plan, and works with the EBTC program at UMass-Boston to provide support for growing environmental technology companies.

David is active with the Critical Management Studies interest group of the Academy of Management. He is on the International Advisory Board of the Centre for Business and Sustainable Development at Massey University, New Zealand.

During 1998/99, David was a Faculty Research Fellow at the Global Environmental Assessment project, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
