Scholarship
I have worked as a
rehabilitation counselor in the United States and an administrator of a disabled
people's organization in China for many years. My experiences in working with
people with disabilities, rehabilitation professionals, and policy-makers in
both China and the United States helped me understand the roles of social and
economic systems, rehabilitation professionals, and individuals with disabilities
in the process of total rehabilitation. These experiences also helped me develop
the following beliefs:
- A holistic (systemic and ecological)
model is the most effective approach to rehabilitation counseling.
- People's cognition and behavior are
socially rooted and operate within socio-cultural influences. Individuals
are both products and producers of their own environments.
- Adaptation to disability is a life-long
process. Rehabilitation counselors should have a life-span orientation when
working with people who have disabilities and accept quality of life as the
ultimate goal of rehabilitation.
These beliefs are interlinked and circular. They lay
the foundation for my scholarly work.
