The Subject Tutoring program offers individual and/or group tutoring to students enrolled in 100-200 level courses in the College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Mathematics at U-Mass Boston. Information on course areas in which you can register on-line can be found on the Subject Tutoring Homepage at:

Who are the tutors?

Subject Tutoring Program tutors are predominantly undergraduate students who are recommended by faculty for their proficiency in the subject area.

When can I meet a tutor?

Meeting times depend on tutors’ schedules. We will try to match you with a tutor whose schedule matches yours, and your tutor will try to accommodate you, but please keep in mind that meeting times are ultimately up to the tutor.

Tutoring is regularly offered during the spring and fall semesters. Tutoring may be offered for some courses during the summer session; check with the staff in our office for info.

How do I register to receive tutoring?

First, before registering for tutoring, be sure that you are registered in a 100-200 level course in the College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Mathematics.

Again, information on course areas in which you can register on-line can be found on the Subject Tutoring Homepage at:
http://serlblade2.cs.umb.edu:8450/academic/welcome/subjecttutoring.jsp

Then, be ready to provide us with the following information:

  • Your full name and address
  • Your email address (you must have an email address so that we may send you your tutor’s contact information and other pertinent information. Click here to learn how to obtain a UMass Boston email account)
  • The last four digits of your student ID number, as is on file with the registrar and appears on the back of your ID card.
  • The subject and number of the course you would like to request a tutor for (Example: BIOL 111)
  • The course section number
  • The professor’s name
  • The times you are available to meet with a tutor

Finally, provide us with the information above by filling out our online registration form on the Subject Tutoring Program Home Page at: http://serlblade2.cs.umb.edu:8450/academic/welcome/subjecttutoring.jsp
.

After completing and submitting the registration form, you will get an email confirming your registration.

After we receive your registration form, we will try to match you with a tutor based upon the days and times you have listed. You will then receive a second email letting you know whether or not you have been assigned a tutor and what further action you need to take.

How are tutors assigned to students?

Tutors are assigned to students based upon schedule compatibility. The more available meeting times you provide, the better your chances of getting a tutor are. Also, there may be courses for which only group tutoring sessions are available. You can check group tutoring availability for your course by clicking on the group tutoring button on the menu at the top of your student profile page. Be sure to include these times as available in the schedule you complete when you register online.

What if a tutor cannot be assigned to me?

There are several possible reasons for this. You will be sent an email notifying you if we cannot assign you a tutor, and that email will tell you the reason. See section What do I do when I get an email that says a tutor cannot be assigned to me? in the FAQ section: Students- FAQ- Registering for Online Subject Tutoring

How many hours of tutoring can I have?

Your tutor is limited to meeting with you no more than 1 hour per week if you meet with them individually and 1.5 hours per week if you meet in a group session. If you need more assistance, we encourage you to make use of your instructor’s office hours.

Top

What should I bring to my session?

Briny any class handouts or study materials that you think will be of assistance to you during the individual tutor session. Most importantly, bring questions for your tutor. The tutor is there to answer your questions about the material.

Top

What happens during a tutor session?

The format of the 1-hour individual tutor session is determined collaboratively by you and your tutor. Perhaps you’ll spend the entire hour covering one particularly difficult section in your course. Or, you and your tutor may discuss several topics within that time period.

Top

Where do I meet my tutor?

Once you have been assigned to work with a tutor, your tutor will email you with a meeting time and location. Be sure to email your tutor back to confirm this appointment.

Top

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

If, for some unavoidable reason, you are unable to meet your tutor, please contact your tutor at least 24 hours in advance by telephone or email. If you miss a meeting with your tutor and haven’t given 24 hours’ notice beforehand, you will seriously jeopardize your privilege to receive tutoring in the future. Your tutor is paid an hourly rate for time spent with you. If you don’t show, your tutor doesn’t get paid!

Please be responsible; there are many people requesting help and tutors have limited availability.

Top

What is group tutoring?

A group tutor session (sometimes called a workshop) is a weekly hour and a half question and answer forum between one tutor and two or more students. All of the students in a session are enrolled in the same course.

Top

What should I bring to a group tutor session?

Bring any class handouts or study materials that you think will be of assistance to you during the group tutor session. You should also, most importantly, bring any questions you have about the material.

Top

Am I eligible to receive tutoring in more than one course? How do I request tutoring for additional courses?

You may receive tutoring for any 100-200 level course in the College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Mathematics. To request tutoring for additional courses after you have registered, login to the system with your loginID and password and then click “Add Course” in the top menu bar.

Again, information on course areas in which you can register on-line can be found on the Subject Tutoring Homepage at:
http://serlblade2.cs.umb.edu:8450/academic/welcome/subjecttutoring.jsp
