COMMUNITY PORTRAITS

CRITERION #2

ASSIGNMENT #2F

DUE IN SESSION #8

This assignment requires you to write brief narrative summaries of the major facts revealed by the data you have collected and summarized for your community, and to write brief interpretations of what the facts suggest about the type of community it is and the implications of the changes.

For each of the major categories of information that you have about Population, Housing and Economic Characteristics write several paragraphs summarizing and interpreting the changes from 1990 to 2000 in each aspect of the community.

For example, a paragraph on the total population and age distribution might say: "In 1990 the population of town X was Y, Z percent less than in 2000. The biggest changes were an increase in the number of pre-school children (under 5), a decrease in the number of children (5-17) and increase in the number of young adults (25-44). This increase in the number of young families in the town probably led to [say something about implications for local services and policies] in the 1990s."

The next paragraph should then summarize the racial/ethnic changes. Then there should be a paragraph on gender and family/ household composition changes from 1990 to 2000, with some interpretation of what the changes mean.

Similarly, you should write several paragraphs on Housing characteristics, how they have changed and what they mean for the community. Then write several on Economic characteristics and changes and what they mean for the community.

Finally, you need to write a brief introductory paragraph, giving an overall theme about whether the community changed much or not over the decade, and if so, the broad areas of change.

The narrative must be typed using word-processing software. It must be written in complete sentences and paragraphs. Be sure to proof-read for grammar, spelling and punctuation.
