HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

MGTCOM 360

WORKSHOP FORMAT

To demonstrate competency in human resource management in the workshop format, one must meet the standards of the competency statement posted in the CPCS website.  One way of doing this independently is to complete the assignments listed in the syllabus for the course version of this competency.  Students are not required to buy the text in the syllabus, but you will need to read it or some other human resource text (from the library or a friend) to have sufficient knowledge to adequately do the assignments. Assignments may be turned in any time during the semester, but you should not wait to the end of the semester as that may not allow sufficient time for any needed revisions to the assignments.

To complete the competency within the workshop, you must do the four seminar assignments.  The four assignments for students in the workshop are: a job description, a hiring process summary, a summary of compensation and benefit issues, and a discussion of labor/management relations.  These assignments are to be done for an early childhood education arts program.  Pretend you are running a child care program for children 2 to 5 years old and do the following tasks.

1.                  Job Description.  Provide a job description for an early childhood education arts educator.  For that job describe the tasks the person has to perform, skills needed, and education or experience required.  Avoid language that would be discriminatory, prejudicial, or illegal.

2.                  Hiring Process Summary.  For the arts educator position, describe the process a child care program should use for hiring someone into that position.  Include information you think should be submitted, to whom, and by what means.  Describe the interview process, what additional information is obtained by this process, and how it is used to reject or select candidates. List three questions that should not be asked of a job applicant.  Also describe who makes the final hiring decision.

3.                  Compensation and Benefit Summary.  Describe a typical compensation and benefit package for the arts educator.  Discuss salary range and factors affecting starting salary.  Summarize health and education benefits, vacation, personal days, promotion possibilities, and retirement options.

4.                  Labor Relations Summary.  List three laws that apply to the child educator position you have been discussing (at least one must be a federal law and at least one must be a state law). Discuss how the laws apply to this job.  Give an example for each law of a management practice that would violate the law.
