A Problem-Solving Example: Estimation using on-line data search and calculation

Find out how much it costs to leave a 60W light bulb on a day by doing an Internet search for the price of 1kW-h (kilowatt-hour) of electricity in Boston, then calculating the cost.

I haven’t specified residential or commercial/industrial so there will be a range of values. A search example is

-open http://www.google.com/

-type ‘nstar’ in the search box

-click on the link to the nstar website

-click on ‘Rates and Tariffs’

-enter the required town info: Boston

-it shows $______ (not including fixed monthly customer fee)

Team leader: please copy this entire file into a Word file, then use Save As/ Web page (*.htm,*.html) to save it as ‘internet.html’ (you should include the extension ‘.html’!)  into a flash drive or a temporary folder in the hard drive. After working with your team to search the price of electricity and calculate the cost to leave a 60W light bulb on a day, record the answers into boxes below for your team. Save and close the file, then upload it onto the ‘files’ folder in the server via ftp://www.students.umb.edu using the login information provided for your team.
