1.- (a)
White light goes from air through a glass slab with parallel surfaces. Will its
colors be dispersed when it emerges from the glass? Explain.
(b) You send white light
through two identical glass prisms oriented as shown. Trace the light rays and
describe the outgoing ray
2.- For
the air-medium (index of refraction n) interface, show that the critical angle
and the polarizing angle are related by
3.- A light ray is
propagating in a crystal where its wavelength is 540 nm. It strikes the
interior surface of the crystal with an incidence angle of 340 and
emerges into the surrounding air at 760 to the surface normal. (a)
Find the light frequency
(b) Find its wavelength in air.
4. If you place a
screen at the location of a virtual image, would you see the image on the
screen? Why or why not?
5.- By
holding a magnifying glass 25 cm from my desk lamp, I find I can focus an image
of the lamp’s bulb on a wall 1.6 m from the lamp. What is the focal length of
my magnifying glass?
6.- A
double convex lens has equal curvature radii of 35 cm. An object placed 30 cm
from the lens forms a real image at 128 cm. What is the refractive index of the
lens?
7.- (a) You can hear sound around the corners but
you can’t see around the corners. Why is the difference?
(b) Describe the change in the
diffraction pattern of a single slit as the slit is narrowed.
8. Green light at 520 nm is diffracted by a
grating with 3000 lines per cm. Through what angle is the light diffracted in
(a) first and
(b) fifth order?
9.- Find
the minimum thickness of a soap film n=1.33 in which 550-nm light will undergo
constructive interference.
