Instructions for the Team Webmaster

Tomas Materdey

Please read and follow these instructions carefully. This is all you need to create and maintain the team web site. There are two short video clips that show you some of the steps, which you can find on the e-syllabus. These instructions refer to MS Word 2000 or later to create html files, no html knowledge is needed.

1.- Each team should designate a Webmaster for each project. The Webmaster will create, store and maintain all html files related to the team’s webpage and will upload updated files to the web server whose URL address will be ftp://www.students.umb.edu (copy and paste this into the browser address box, clicking on it may not work). It is VERY IMPORTANT that the Webmaster keeps a copy of ALL related html files that will be made available to the team’s Webmaster for the next project. To request a username and password, each Webmaster should email the instructor with subject “requesting password” and including in the message the following statement: “I, your full name, have read the university web standards at http://www.umb.edu/web/policies/students.html and will follow them while accessing and/or uploading files to this server. I understand my access to this server is limited to the Spring 2007 semester and that the username and password are non-transferable and non-compliance with these rules will be subject to disciplinary actions. “

2.-The first thing the Webmaster needs to do is to create and upload an index.html file that will serve as the team’s homepage. It could be that this file was already created and uploaded (when you are not the first Webmaster in your team), in which case the team’s homepage would show up at http://www.students.umb.edu/e103tX where X is your team number. If this is the case then you can jump to step 3 below.

2.1.- Open a New-file in Word. Write something about your team: e.g. team#, member names, etc., then create links to projects, e.g.  0, 1, 2, or 3 with a Webmaster name for each (regarding how to create a link, see 3.4 below)

2.2.- Click on File –Save As; in the Save-in dialogue box click and find CD or other media drive, or a temporary folder in C:; in the Save-as-type dialogue box, click and find Webpage, then in the File-name box write index.html (include this exact extension!); then click on Save

2.3.- Open a browser window and enter this URL  ftp://www.students.umb.edu (note that the usual http is replaced by ftp, type or copy and paste it into your browser address box, clicking on it may not work), then Login with the user name and password provided (to get to the login window, you may need to right-click on the mouse, then select “Login as”). Using My Computer, in a separate window, open the folder containing the index.html file you have just created. To upload this file onto the server, simply drag and drop it into the ftp window

2.4.- To check whether you have gone on-line with this index.html file, go back to the Engin103 web page http://www.faculty.umb.edu/tomas_materdey/103s07 , click on teams homepage,  click on Team X, where X is your team number, make sure you see what you have just uploaded. If a picture you added to the web page did not show, see section 4 below.

3.- To create and upload a Project file and to update your index.html file with a link to the Project file:

3.1.-Create a new file in Word with information regarding your Project Y (Y could be 0, 1, 2, 3). Save it as a webpage with the name: projectY.html (include this exact extension!).

3.2.-Access the Engin 103 web server at ftp://www.students.umb.edu (copy and paste this into the browser address box, clicking on it may not work!). Log in with the username and password provided. Check if a files folder was created, if not, click on File in the upper left corner of the browser window, then select New, type in files.

3.3.-Double click on the files folder. Using My Computer, in a separate window open the folder containing the projectY.html file you have just created. To upload this file onto the server, simply drag and drop it into the ftp window (where the files folder is open). If a picture you added is not shown, see section 4.

3.4.- To update your index.html file with a link to the projectY.html, open the first file, at the selected location, click on Insert/Hyperlink. In the File/Address box type the URL of your Project Y page uploaded, which is http://www.students.umb.edu/e103tX/files/projectY.html . In the Text to Display box type “Project Y”. Then click on O.K., save your updated index.html file, and upload it to the server following 2.3 as before.

4.- If your filename.html file (where filename can be index or projectY) contains an image, the image will be automatically stored in your disk in a folder called filename_files as you save your file as a webpage into your disk. For the image to appear online you will need to upload this folder to the Engin 103 server. To upload  the filename_files  folder, drag and drop it into the ftp window with the folder containing the filename.html file open., i.e. you need to upload the image folder called filename_files into the ftp folder that also contains the associated filename.html you uploaded.

5.- Please ask questions if something is not clear.
