Introduction to Data Modeling with Excel

We used as data the periods (X) of a pendulum versus its length (Y). We fit the data into a cubic polynomial model (4 coefficients) using “Solver” to minimize the deviations.

Logbook

Just to remind that the logbook is a very important component of the course and will be evaluated, together with the final exam they count 20% of the course grade.

You should record the logbook on a daily basis, with pages numbered and dated, about two main topics:

-Discussions and findings about projects, collectively or individually

-Answers to questions posted here in the class notes and other learning conclusions you found by doing activities related to this course.

The next logbook due date is Feb 23, 2006.

Logbook questions:

1-      What are the coefficients a,b,c,d in relation to the model we make for a set of data?

2-      What is the s parameter, why is it important? How to obtain a model using “Solver”?

3-      What is data modeling? What can I do with the model?
