Engin 103

Instructions for the Team Webmaster

Tomas Materdey

Please read and follow these instructions carefully. This is all you need to create and maintain the team web site. These instructions refer to MS Word 2000 or later to create html files, no html knowledge is needed.

1.- Each team should designate a Webmaster for each project. The Webmaster will create, store and maintain all html files related to the team’s webpage and will upload updated files to the web server using ftp://www.students.umb.edu (do not click on this link, instead copy and paste this into the browser URL address box). It is VERY IMPORTANT that the Webmaster keeps a copy of ALL related html files and make them available to the Webmaster for the next project. To request a username and password, each Webmaster should email the TA with subject “requesting password” and including in the message the following statement: “I, your full name, have read the University Web Policies and Standards at http://www.umb.edu/it/policy/ and will follow them while accessing and/or uploading files to this server. I understand my access to this server is limited to the Fall 2011 semester and that the username and password are non-transferable and non-compliance with these rules will be subject to disciplinary actions. “

2.-First thing: the Webmaster needs to create and upload an index.html file that will serve as the team’s homepage. If you are not the Webmaster for the first project, this file may exist already, in which case the team’s homepage would show up at http://www.students.umb.edu/e103tX where X is your team number if you attend Section 1 (9:30 AM) or 2+your team number if you attend Section 2 (2:00 PM). For example if you attend Section 1 and you are team 5, X is 5; if you attend Section 2 and you are team 7, X is 27. In this case jump to step 3 below.

2.1.- Open a New-file in Word. Write something about your team: e.g. team#, member names, etc., then create links to projects, e.g.  0, 1, 2, or 3 with a Webmaster name for each (regarding how to create a link, see 3.4 below)

2.2.- Click on File (or MS Office icon its 2007 version) –Save As; in the Save-in dialogue box click and find your USB flash drive, or a temporary folder in C:; in the Save-as-type dialogue box, click and select Web Page (*.htm; *.html), not Single File Web Page (*.htm; *.html) nor Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *.html) , then in the File-name box write index.html (include the ‘.html’ extension!); then click Save

2.3.- Open a browser window and enter this URL  ftp://www.students.umb.edu (do not click on this link, instead type or copy and paste it into your browser URL address box, note that the usual http is replaced by ftp), then Login with the user name and password provided (to get to the login window, you may need to right-click on the mouse, then select “Login as”). Using My Computer, in a separate window, open the local folder (in flash drive or hard drive) containing the index.html file you have just created. To upload this file onto the server, simply drag and drop it into the ftp window

Depending on the version of Internet Explorer (IE) installed in the computer you are using, if after typing ftp://www.students.umb.edu into a browser window you get a blank window, in that case click on “Start”, then select “Run” to get the window below, you need to type ftp://www.students.umb.edu  into the “Open” box, and hit OK.

If you are using IE7.0 or later, after typing ftp://www.students.umb.edu into a browser window you will get a blank page,  within this blank page click on the “Page” tab on the upper right side of the browser window, then select “Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer”.

When the following error message shows up, click OK.

When you see a blank window as shown below, right click on the mouse and select “Login as”

When you see the window below, enter the username and password

Now you are logged into the server, if you see a blank window, you need to upload a team homepage created using Word and named “index.html”. If the homepage you created contains a picture there is a folder named “index_files” you will need to upload here as well.

2.4.- To check whether you have gone on-line with this index.html file, go back to the Engin103 web page http://www.faculty.umb.edu/tomas_materdey/103f11 , click on teams homepage,  find your section and click on Team X, where X is your team number, make sure you see what you have just uploaded. If a picture you added to the web page did not show, see section 4 below.

3.- To create and upload a Project file and to update your index.html file with a link to the Project file:

3.1.-Create a new file in Word with information regarding your Project Y (Y could be 0, 1, 2, 3 or 0p1, 0p2, 1p1, 1p2, etc.). Save it as a webpage with the name: projectY.html (include the html extension!).

3.2.-Access the Engin 103 web server at ftp://www.students.umb.edu (copy and paste this into the browser address box, clicking on it will not work!). Log in with the username and password provided. Check if a files folder was created, if not, click on File in the upper left corner of the browser window, then select New, and type in files.

3.3.-Double click on the files folder. Using My Computer, in a separate window open the folder in your flash drive containing the projectY.html file you have just created. To upload this file onto the server, simply drag and drop it into the ftp window (where the files folder is open). If a picture you added is not shown, see section 4.

3.4.- To update your index.html file with a link to the projectY.html, open the first file in your flash drive, at the selected location, click on Insert/Hyperlink. In the File/Address box type the URL of your Project Y page uploaded, which is http://www.students.umb.edu/e103tX/files/projectY.html . In the Text to Display box type “Project Y”. Then click on O.K., save your updated index.html file, close it, then upload it to the server following 2.3 as before.

4.- If your filename.html file (where filename can be index or projectY) contains an image, the image will be automatically stored in your flash drive in a folder called filename_files as you save your file as a webpage into your disk. For the image to appear online you will need to upload this folder to the server. To upload  the filename_files  folder, drag and drop it into the ftp window with the folder containing the filename.html file open., i.e. you need to upload the image folder called filename_files into the ftp folder that also contains the associated filename.html you uploaded.

5.- Please ask questions if something is not clear.

Below is a sample team webpage. The tables of Leaders and Attendances as shown are required.

The attendances table will be maintained by the current team leader. It is up to the team to decide and design the other elements of the web page.

(Team leaders: please update attendance for your team during class: select cell, then choose ‘bright green’ for shading if present, ‘sea green’ if absence was pre-notified to you and the TA, leave color as ‘indigo’ for absence. In the example above: Cooper was absent in class meeting #2 and Bardeen pre-notified his absence in class meeting #3. Use the example below to add links to the html versions of your presentation files for the different projects)
