Project 1
Data Modeling using Excel:
Data Smoothening
In this project, you are required to
work in teams to model two data sets, one of your choices (first day) and one
given by us (second day). During the presentations the teams will show how they
chose a specific model, what are the parameters, and a graph to show how the
model fits with the data. Data are generally discrete and not regularly spaced,
for presentations a smoothening graph is needed, i.e. a graph that shows the
trend of the data, with additional points between. The presentations will be
graded and the team that gets the best average grade out of two days of
presentations will receive 10 bonus points for their project.
The webpage on the project, by the
team webmaster, along with the project report, by the team leader, will be due
the class after the second day of the presentations (please check the
e-syllabus for exact dates). The project report is expected to be a good
written document (see Good Writing
Practices), and graded under three categories: correct grammar and neat
presentation; logical arguments and structure; accurate report of the team
project, completeness, and no plagiarism. Project report will be submitted by
the team leader in hardcopies with member signatures. A complete report should
include the following sections:
-Introduction: brief description of
project objectives in your own words, background information about the data and
possible models, work distribution among the team members, and timelines for
the different parts of the project: research, design, testing
-Design: descriptions of the
different phases until your team achieved the final model, this section should
include spreadsheets with parameters, standard deviation s-parameters and
graphs.
-Analysis: comments on the results obtained,
possible improvements. It should also include a brief manual of operation for
the spreadsheet, and appropriate recognition of other author’s materials if
used in your project.
-Conclusion: overview of the team achievement
and lections learned for the future.
The team leaders will present a
project time line in one of the earlier meetings about the project.
Grades will be computed as follows:
