Graphing calculator!
Graphing calculator is a tool to enhance students learning. They can graph linear functions, polynomial functions, bar graph, and scatter plot. The students put an equation into the calculator and it graphs it (its like magic). They are become a requirement for teachers and students to learn how to use them.

Jane Hampshire teaches at St. Agnes Academy in Memphis, TN and Elizabeth Greiner teaches at Frayser High School in Memphis, TN develop a lesson plan using the graphing calculator. The topic is A sick astronaut. Students will investigate temperature data given in Celsius and Fahrenheit and use the graphing calculator to derive the conversion formula. Students will work in-groups or individually. The lesson reviews linear equations and measures of central tendency by apply them in a motivational, problem-solving situation.

Students should be familiar with how to define functions to be graphed using the Y=key and how to set up a standard viewing screen using Zoom 6.
Notes to Teachers:
Students ought to be previously taught to solve radical equations. The first problem was a demonstration, and the second was done together with the students. Students were then assigned to complete a lab sheet for each of the three problems attached, completing the assignment outside of class.

Spreadsheet!
Spreadsheet can do the same thing as the graphing calculator. Spreadsheets are useful for plotting data, to produce line graphs, pie charts, histogram, etc. They are also useful when teaching Arithmetic and Geometric progressions, as it is very easy to generate the actual progression involved in a question and determine the answer from it. The spreadsheet makes students think about how the process works. They have to use formula in order for the process to work.

How to make a bar graph

These are specific directions for Mrs. Alejandres mathematics students at Frisbie Middle School. Students were given a lesson on making graphs using a Claris Works spreadsheet file. They are to apply what they learned in that lesson as they work on a Team Project involving a survey, data collection and data display.
Select all of your entries in Column A and B.
Go to Options, select Make Chart.
A window will appear with the different types of graphs.
Select Bar and consider the different options at the bottom of the window.
Try them and see which ones enhance your graph. Remember that you are displaying data to present information: Your graph should be clear.
Go to Labels, type in your Title.
Go to Axes, notice that y-axis is selected. Type a name for the y-axis (That is the line going from top to bottom on your graph).
Select x-axis. Type a name for the x-axis (that is the line going from left to right along the bottom of the graph).
Now you are ready to make your graph. Select OK.

Insert your disk.
Open your disk. Find a Claris Works file and open it.
Now that you are in the Claris Works program, go to File and select New.
Look at the list of different files, select Spreadsheet.
Go to File, select Save as.
In the window that appears, type a name for your file, click on Save.
Now you are ready to enter the data that you wish to display on a graph.
