Security

You may notice when using our login tools warnings about entering secure Web sites. We use a secure server to ensure that when you transmit your user name and password, it is not intercepted by someone.

We also employ other features that ensure safe and reliable communication between your Web browser and our server. Software such as Norton's Internet Security can interfere with these tools. For a full explanation, please see our page about "referer errors," in particular, cause number 3.

Features of this server

For Faculty and Staff

This server allows you to login and instantly update your directory information, including:

• Your preferred contact email
• Your name
• Your phone number
• Your location on campus
• The password you use to access this directory
• The URL of your home page
• Additional information such as your office hours

Faculty also have additional privileges on this server. See the For Faculty Only section below.

The server also is closely connected to our new Web-based discussion tools, which allow faculty and staff to create threaded discussions that are open to the world, limited to UMB faculty and staff or limited to a custom list of people the discussion owner specifies.

For Faculty Only

In addition to the features listed under Faculty and Staff above, faculty can also:

• Update their educational backgrounds
• Update their areas of academic expertise

Also, by default, all faculty members have access to Web space on this server and the URL http://www.faculty.umb.edu/firstname_lastname

Access to this space is via FTP. Note that your FTP password is the same as the password you use to access the directory information. If you use the directory features to change your password, your directory password will change instantly. But your FTP password will not be updated until the following day.
