Earthen Vessels initiated its summer camp back in 1980, renting an old hilltop farm in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom from one of the president's colleague's at UMassBoston and spending two weeks mountain hiking, swimming, playing volleyball or soccer, singing and sharing in the evening and getting to know one another despite differences in background, neighborhood, age or sex.

In 1985 Earthen Vessels was able to acquire its own site in central Vermont, on the eastern slope of the main ridge of the Green Mountains. We have an old farmhouse and a more recent outbuilding on nine acres, but surrounded by thousands of acres of the Green Mountain National Forest, and just above the headwaters of the White River. We did a lot of rehab work in the winter and spring of 1986 and since then have been able to do several sessions each summer, typically two two-week sessions with 12-14 year olds and one Leadership Training week with 16-21 year olds with leadership potential, some of whom stay on or come back as counselors at camp.

In 1997 we experimented with a small family camp at the end of the summer, and we plan to do two such camps in August 1998, bringing two or three families from Boston's Dorchester or Roxbury neighborhoods to enjoy a few days of fun and sharing in a beautiful and peaceful space.
